If you make long-distance phone calls to keep in touch, you're probably familiar with Skype. But with reports of Skype offering backdoors for governments to listen to your conversations and issues of stability with the service going down, what are the alternatives to make cheap calls to Pakistan or other long distance destinations?

Each VoIP service offers a different set of features with some being entirely free, whereas others charge for specific services or for premium rate features. They also operate on a range of operating systems with the standard Windows PC, Linux and Mac OSX platforms being covered. Different services also support older or newer computers, depending on their processing speed.

Gizmo Project is an open-source VoIP project allowing cheap calls over the internet. It includes Call In and Call Out (similar features to SkypeIn and SkypeOut), conversation recording and geolocation for caller and receiver and instant messaging, typically for a charge of 1.9 cents per minute. There is also a business spin-off, SIPphone.com which has business-oriented features such as PSTN (public switched telephone network) gateways, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and voice mail. Gizmo works with Windows, Linux and Mac.

Google Talk is a free, gmail-integrated service that makes setup easy by automatically including your gmail contacts. It can be used from the Google site or downloaded as a 1.8 meg application. It supports a wide range of language options including British English but is limited, supporting Blackberry and Windows platforms and cannot make calls to mobile or landlines.

The German project ComBOTS can connect your PC or landline to others around the world via your broadband service with no additional charge over your line rental. It also allows calls to mobiles and picture and file transfers, chat and text messaging. The only downside is its inability to make calls from mobile phones.

Free PC to PC calls can be made using Jajah as well as a limited number of calls to and from landlines. Jajah offers up to 1000 minutes of free calls per month with heavier users asked to sign up for the premium service. The site works by you entering your number and the number you wish to call, it then calls you and connects you to the other number once you answer. The free minutes make Jajah a good choice for cheap calls to Australia or making cheap calls to India. Built-in plugins for Outlook and your OS X Address Book make Jajah a good choice for Mac users.

Vbuzzer is a Canadian-based service which offers computer to computer voice calls, video conferencing and allows you to send faxes, all for free, with low charges for calls to mobile and landlines at 1.5 cents per minute for calls to Canada, China and the US and 1.7 cents per minute for the rest of the world, making this a good choice for cheap calls to India and for cheap calls to Australia. This service has low hardware requirements needing only a 500 MHz processor to run making it a good choice for those with older computers. It runs on Windows XP and 2000 OSs.

Many people do not look beyond Skype when looking for ways to make cheap calls to Pakistan or other places distant places where friends and family live. There are many services, of which these are just a few.

What Medium Do You Use To Access Facebook?

Hard to believe that Facebook launched just 6 years ago and now has over 500 million active users, 50 per cent of which log on to the site in any given day. It's the social networking site that has taken over (most of) the world. It is now the most used social network service and with the growing number of mobile device users, it begs the question: Is mobile the primary method by which people access Facebook?

Facebook's own Press room tells us that 200 million of Facebook users are currently accessing on mobile devices, which is under half, but interestingly that those users are twice as active as non-mobile users. Compare that 200 million with just 65 million the year before and the growth is quite simply staggering. Given that accessing Facebook via mobile is not always smooth or easy, then if Facebook were to iron out these issues, the number would presumably be much larger.

Facebook CTO, Mr Bret Taylor took the floor recently at Inside Social Apps, saying that with such a large amount of Facebook users accessing via their mobile devices that it makes sense "... to make Mobile our primary focus for our platform this year". Taylor said the company had tremendous engineering challenges in ensuring an even experience across all of its web and mobile presences. Facebook has already introduced a single sign-on facility for ease of use, which has been welcomed but there is much more work to do. Hopefully Facebook will fully address and ultimately enhance mobile user experience in 2011 (watch out for HTML5!!).

According to some statistics a half of all mobile users engaging on FB use iPhone or iPad, with RIM's Blackberry client for Facebook coming in second with 60 million users and Android claiming 12 million users. Some reviewers indicate that neither iPhone nor Google have been terribly excited to support Facebook users to date and that as a result, current applications have been falling short on ease of use of the social networking site. However, they could really be shooting themselves in the foot as smartphone users are increasingly Facebook users and they will want the best phone to do the job.

Whilst mobile is currently not quite the primary method for accessing Facebook, it probably won't be long before it actually is and so everyone in the mobile business needs to watch the growth trends carefully. Becoming part of the mobile marketing scene makes even more sense than ever given this growth of relationship between social networking and mobile phone users. It's never too late to get on this fast-growing mobile marketing bandwagon!

Cell phones have been a big help for us women especially at these times have become unsafe for us to be anywhere in the city with no companion.
